2 Day Learning Seminar ‘Waterproofing’ Nov. 8th and 9th 2023

Waterproofing is a two-day course designed for the practicing waterproofing consultant and those who are aspiring to become a Registered Waterproofing Consultant. This course focuses on split-slab plaza deck systems, surface-applied waterproofing, and below-grade waterproofing. The course starts with a review of differences between roofing, dampproofing, and waterproofing.
Other topics include waterproofing materials and accessories used for various applications, design and specification, application techniques; and a thorough review of concrete used as a substrate for waterproofing, including typical concrete repair materials and techniques used for restoration of concrete slabs prior to application of waterproofing systems.
Educational Credits: 16

Course Learning Objectives:

1. Review plaza deck and expanded use roof systems.
2. Discuss codes and standards related to the application of waterproofing systems.
3. Identify the various types of waterproofing and the benefits and pitfalls of each system. Bentonite, capillary, hot rubber, multi-ply, sheet membrane and liquid applied.
4. Discuss concrete repair and the correct application of sealants.

This course is an introduction to the use of Portland Cement Plaster (Stucco) as an exterior cladding system applied to both commercial and residential buildings. Participants will be introduced to relevant codes and standards, system layers, components and recent advances.

HSW Justification:
This seminar will discuss: Designs of State-of-the-art moisture, air, thermal and vapor control layers of today’s stucco assemblies. Designs that are intended to help protect the building from unwanted moisture accumulation, material degradation that can reduce the potential for conditions that can lead to mold growth.

Learning Objective 1:
Participants will be presented a review of ICC I-Codes and ASTM Standards applicable to the design and construction of stucco assemblies.

Learning Objective 2:
Participants will learn about the materials and layers of stucco assemblies. How the layers are intended to function, and how they are properly constructed.

Learning Objective 3:
Participants will gain an understanding of the building science behind advanced stucco assemblies.

Learning Objective 4:
Participants will be presented design information on advanced stucco assemblies and how they can meet performance and energy code requirements of the ICC I-Codes

 

Presenter

Pete Burns has over 30 years of experience in architectural testing and inspections. As a former Technical Representative for the Energy Conservatory, manufacturer of the

Minneapolis Blower Door, Pete provided technical field support and training on residential and commercial enclosure air leakage testing.

Pete is currently the Director of Technical Services for the NW Wall & Ceiling Bureau (NWCB) a

technical trade association of signatory commercial wall & ceiling contractors in Washington and Oregon.

The NWCB is best known for publishing the Stucco Resource Guide since 1979, now in its 4th Edition.

Prior to his 36 years in the roofing industry, Ed, a registered architect, worked in the Chicago office of Skidmore Owings and Merrill. First joining Hunter Panels in 2002 as the Midwest Regional Sales Manager Ed has been has held numerous positions including product manager, technical manager and director of business development.
