Designing Walls for
Control of Air, Water, Thermal & Vapor
Summary:
Review a variety of building types and discuss the continuity of detailing required to manage moisture, air, vapor, and thermal performance, as well as wind resistance requirements at the critical wall-to-roof interface. You will be provided guidelines to successfully navigate these often competing interests and provide strategies for achievable performance through design and specification without compromising the aesthetics with distracting details for commercial building wall systems.
This presentation discusses the impacts of whole building performance, design requirements, material & assembly requirements, and installation verification requirements during construction.
Learning Objectives:
• Discuss the requirements to manage moisture, air, vapor, and thermal continuity.
• Recognize the changing building and energy codes, and their interaction across building enclosure system interfaces.
• Apply specific examples and air barrier systems to current and future project designs.
• Outline design and specification requirements to set performance requirements for wall systems.

Exterior Wall Technology & Science Course information
Course Description This two-day course provides basic exterior wall technology and terminology that will be used as the fundamental base for future exterior wall course offerings. The course covers a broad range of topics, including types and functions of exterior walls, psychrometrics and moisture movement, design objectives and building code requirements, wall penetrations, materials, coatings and water repellants, and sealants. This broad course is aimed at those preparing to expand their knowledge into exterior walls and at those already practicing in this area who want to further develop their knowledge in exterior wall technology.
Learning Objectives 1. The learner will explore building code requirements for exterior walls will be covered during the course. 2. The learner will understand the proper use of coating, water repellents and sealants will be discussed during this course. 3. The learner will discuss psychrometrics and moisture movement and why moisture migration is so important in-wall design. The learner will explore building code requirements for exterior walls will be covered during the course 4. The learner will understand proper designs for wall penetrations will be covered, along with problems that are created by poor design details.
